A Perfect Reflection: Last year Aaron Johnson, now a Floyd Central High School student, was encouraged to write a play based off of an assignment he completed for a class at a high school in Washington County. As a result of the encouragement and support of adults, Aaron wrote a full play, had it copyrighted. The play will be produced in Salem at the Washington County Actors Community Theatre the weekend of August 28th but has also been picked up by the Kentucky Center for the Arts and will be in production there the weekend of September 11th. The play takes an in depth look at two teenagers who are struggling with two very difficult but equally complex situations. The underlying theme of the play addresses the fact that all of us, adults and teenagers alike, often put on a mask to the outside world to hide ourselves from disappointment, hurt, failure, insecurities and the judgment of others. So while these two teenagers may seem perfectly normal and stable to the outside world, internally they are dealing with turmoil, conflict and unrest. Take advantage of this chance to attend the play with your teen/tween age child and their friends. This opens the door to have a conversation with your youth about issues that maybe difficult to bring up otherwise. Also consider this: it’s a
- Great opportunity to support a local teen and be a builder of the 40 Developmental Assets.
- Great opportunity to gain insight into the many challenges our youth are facing.
- Make it into a social outing and take advantage of the car ride home to have a conversation with your kids!

Can you offer HELP – 2 possible ways?
Website Training: I’ve shared a couple of times that we’ve upgraded our website; that includes administering the updates through WordPress. I’ve worked with the program for about 2 months now and it would certainly help if I had someone to spend 1-2 hours with me, showing me practical applications of including some of the info I want to post on the website. If you have experience and would be able to help out – or if you know someone who has experience in WordPress, I certainly would appreciate if you might be able to help me increase my proficiency. You can contact me through email or phone (923-1160).
Partners’ Network meetings: time is so valuable for all of us and we have to make many strategic decisions on how we spend our time. I want any time spent with Youth Count meetings to be of value and importance to you. Please share with me what items/info/action would bring you to the table and have you feel that your time is well spent and/or that you’ve gained useful tools and resources. I’d appreciate any emails with this info; additionally I will be making phone follow-up calls to get feedback from some of you. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Meanwhile, I share with you this message every adult should read because it touches on many ways we built assets, reminds us that each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend) influences the life of a child, and reminds us that children are watching and imitating us.
WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn’t feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I learned most of life’s lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I looked at you and wanted to say, ‘Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.’ Author Unknown
